"Digital downloads vs physical products: where the margin really is"
Digital downloads (printables, templates, patterns, 3D models, stream overlays) look like free money next to physical products: no materials, no packing, no post office. The margin per sale really is higher. What changes is where the work and risk sit.
Side by side, one $12 sale
| Physical item | Digital download | |
|---|---|---|
| Buyer pays | $12 + $4.50 shipping | $12 |
| Etsy fees (standard US rates) | about $2.02 | about $1.59 |
| Materials and packaging | about $3.50 | $0 |
| Postage | about $4.20 | $0 |
| You keep | about $6.78 | about $10.41 |
The fees in the digital column are lower simply because there's no shipping charge for the percentage fees to apply to.
Where the digital work goes instead
- Up front. A digital product takes all its work before the first sale: designing, testing on different printers or software, writing instructions, making previews. A physical product spreads work across every order.
- Being found. Digital categories are crowded because the cost to enter is low. Expect to spend more effort on photos, previews and listing titles.
- Support. "The file won't open" messages are the digital version of a broken item. Clear instructions and file formats cut them down.
- Copying. Some buyers share files. Watermarked previews and a clear licence help; there's no perfect fix.
When physical still wins
Physical products can command higher prices for perceived value (a hand-poured candle, a printed piece), build repeat customers who come back for refills, and sit in categories with less competition. Many small shops do best with both: a physical core range and digital add-ons.
Be honest with buyers
For digital listings, say clearly that nothing is shipped, list the file formats and sizes, and say what software is needed. For anything made with generative tools, follow the marketplace's current disclosure rules. Clear listings mean fewer refunds and better reviews.
Run both versions of your own product through the calculator (set shipping and postage to zero for the digital one).
